Election results
There are four types of elections you can vote in and we administer all of these for Dumfries and Galloway.
Local government (council) elections
We have 12 electoral wards in our region with either three or four councillors representing each area. Elections are held every 5 years using the Single Transferable Voting system to decide who is elected as a councillor.
The most recent council elections were the Scottish Local Government Elections , which were held on Thursday 5 May 2022.

Scottish Parliament elections
The Scottish Parliament is comprised of 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs). Elections to the Scottish Parliament are every 4 years and use the Additional Member System.
When you vote in a Scottish Parliament election, you have two votes - one to elect your constituency member and one to elect your regional member.
The most recent Scottish Parliament elections were held on 6 May 2021. The next Scottish Parliament elections will be in 2026.
UK Parliament elections (General Elections)
Elections for the UK Parliament are held every 5 years. Registered voters in 650 constituencies of the UK vote for a Member of Parliament (MP) to represent them in the House of Commons.
There are two constituencies in the Dumfries and Galloway region:
- Dumfries and Galloway
- Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale
The most recent UK Parliament elections took place on Thursday 4 July 2024.
Community councils
Community councils are not part of local government but play an important role in representing the views of their community to us and other public bodies. Elections are held every 5 years. There are 106 community council areas in Dumfries and Galloway, and usually around 90 community councils are operational at any time.
