Pay council tax

You can pay council tax online, by direct debit, by BACS, telephone, or internet banking payments.

Direct Debit

You can arrange for payments to be taken by Direct Debit; weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

For weekly and fortnightly Direct Debits the payment will be requested from your bank on a Friday.

Direct Debit applications received from March 1 2024 will be applied to your account for the new 2024/25 financial year.  An updated bill will be issued to confirm new instalments once added to your account.  If you wish to pay another financial year, please contact us on 030 33 33 3005 where an adviser will be able to assist.

For monthly Direct Debits you can choose from the 1st, 8th, 15th or 21st of the month.

If you have moved into a new property please  ensure you have told us about your change of address before completing a direct debit.

BACS, telephone, or Internet banking payment 

You can send payments by BACS, telephone or internet banking using these details:

  • Account number: 15084819
  • Sort code: 83-18-06 (Royal Bank of Scotland)
  • Recipient: Dumfries & Galloway Council 
  • Reference: 10 digit council tax account number and postcode (no spaces)

Post Office or PayPoint

You can pay at Post Offices and PayPoints with your payment card or barcoded bill.


You can post cheques to Communities Directorate, Income Team, PO Box 9089, Dumfries DG1 9EB. Cheques should be made payable to Dumfries and Galloway Council, please write your council tax account number on the back.

There are a number of options if you're struggling to pay.

You should contact us as soon as you realise you're having problems paying.

If you fall behind with your payments

If you have missed any of your payments, please call us on 030 33 33 3005 as soon as possible. We are here to help you, whatever your reasons for not paying.

Please remember that if we do not know you are having problems paying, we cannot help you and instead may be forced to take action to recover the amount you owe us.
