Smoke control areas

There are some important things to consider if you're thinking of installing a solid-fuel or wood-burning stove or having an open fire.

Smoke control areas

There are several smoke control areas in Dumfries where you can only burn authorised fuels (such as anthracite and gas).

You may be able to use other fuels if your using an appliance that's exempt under the regulations and the manufacturer recommends a specific fuel.

Bonfires

You are allowed a bonfire in a smoke control area but follow the bonfire guidance.

Nuisance from smoke

You should think about the design and positioning of flues and chimneys so that you do not cause a smoke nuisance to your neighbours (whether you live in in a smoke control area or not).

You may need planning permission or a building warrant for your flue or chimney depending on the design and positioning.
