Register your food business

We're responsible for regulating food safety at premises across the region where food is stored, prepared, distributed or sold (for profit or not). New businesses must register with us at least 28 days before they start trading and we need to know within 28 days if any details change.

Registration is free of charge. You may be fined and/or imprisoned for up to two years if you run an unregistered food business.

Who needs to register

Registration applies to most types of food business:

  • restaurants, hotels and public houses
  • cafes
  • shops and supermarkets
  • staff canteens
  • warehouses
  • guest houses
  • catering businesses run from home, mobile or temporary premises
  • nurseries
  • childminders (use separate application form)

There is a separate process to register a dairy farm if you have a dairy production holding.

Register your food business

Registration is free of charge.

You need to register each premise you operate separately if you have more than one. If you have premises in more than one local authority area then you must register with each local authority individually. Mobile premises operating in more than one local authority area only need to be registered with their home authority.

Products of animal origin

Food businesses manufacturing or handling products of animal origin such as meat products, dairy products or eggs may require approval.  Call 030 33 33 3000 or email environmentalhealth@dumgal.gov.uk if you aren't sure if you need approval.

Changes to your food business

You should also tell us about any changes to your food business:

Let us know within 28 days if:

  • the food business operator changes
  • the nature of the business changes
  • a movable premises changes address
  • your business closes
