Easter Sports Academy in Annandale and Eskdale
Tuesday, 23 October 2012 12:24
Two weeks of high quality sporting opportunities have been organised as part of Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Annandale & Eskdale Sports Academy during the two week school Easter holiday period. Supported by main sponsors, Energy Solutions, the programme has a distinct Olympic Games feel. The majority of the sports included will be featured at the London 2012 Games which begin in July.
The highlights include a number of basketball workshops with Stuart McKay who gained his first Scottish cap in 1994, before moving to play in Georgia (USA). After turning pro he played for the Scottish Rocks and Thames Valley Tigers in the BBL and has over 50 International Caps, including at the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

There will also be table tennis with Dylan De Silva who has played internationally and coached players of Commonwealth standard and gymnastics with former Scottish and British gymnast and qualified level 4 coach Neil Robertson. Children can try their hand at fencing with respected coach Judith Holmes, or take part in rugby festivals with an appearance in Annan by a Glasgow Warrior and Scotland player (subject to club fixtures). Lockerbie will host a celebrated tennis festival lead by tennisscotland development manager Mike Cohen which will include a number of coaching sessions and tournaments.

Finally, there are two trips organised to two Scottish National Centres for sports that will feature heavily in the Olympic Games. Budding Steve Redgraves can join the Sports Academy for a day at the Scottish Rowing Centre, Strathclyde Park, Glasgow, the venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games where we will be joined by Sean Leyland, Performance Coach & Coach of the GB U23 lightweight men’s double scull. This trip will include a shot in the state-of-the-art indoor rowing tank. Gymnasts will also have the chance to visit Inverclyde’s National Sports Training Centre in Largs which has a stunning international standard gymnastics hall used by Scottish Gymnastics for residential squad training.
