According to a YouGov survey carried out last year, 54% of the UK's working age population has low numeracy and half the working-age population have the maths skills of primary school children. On the plus side, people who improve their numeracy skills, even just a bit, are more likely to be in employment, have higher wages, and better wellbeing.

To address this mismatch, a new, free programme of help for adults over 19 will be starting in Dumfries and Galloway in the Autumn with funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund - a national fund aimed at helping you get to grips with budgeting, everyday maths and mathematical confidence-building.

Help will be available in a form that suits you.

  • Do you want to learn general maths in a class? We have that sorted.
  • 'Prefer to do practical maths so that you can cook, work out prices or make sense of the adverts on TV? That's an option too.
  • Feeling the pinch in this Cost of Living Crisis and want help with debt and managing your money? There are people that can help with that.

As a parent, we'll even teach you ways of making maths concepts like numbers, shapes, patterns, matching, and measuring fun so that you can sneak maths into how you play with your kids!

If getting a maths qualification is part of your dream that's doable too - but it's not compulsory.

Our ambition is to offer help in classes, on-line, on a one-to-one basis, and probably in some ways we have yet to identify, so please get in touch and we will see what we can do to make addition attractive, multiplication manageable and budgeting beautiful!

To register an interest or to find out more, simply e-mail Multiply@dumgal.gov.uk and somebody will get back to you to chat with you about the skills you want and the way in which you'd prefer to learn them.

Maths doesn't have to be scary - help is at hand with Multiply.
