Support for festivals and events

Dumfries and Galloway Council is determined to make Dumfries and Galloway the best place in rural Scotland in which to plan, manage, deliver and visit great events. For more than fifteen years the Council has overseen the delivery of successive events strategies that have helped grow creative, memorable and sustainable festivals and events in our beautiful region.

Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the events directly funded and supported by our current events strategy - the Major Festivals and Events Strategy 2018-2021 - generated more than £8m per annum for the regional economy.  The region's Signature Events  - our seven internationally renowned festivals and events (Big Burns Supper, D&G Arts Festival, the Scottish Rally, Spring Fling Open Artists' Studios Weekend, the Tour of Britain, Wigtown Book Festival and World Championship Ice Hockey in Dumfries) are responsible for generating more than 60% of these revenues.

Our Events Action Plan for financial year 2021/2022 can be downloaded here .

In June 2021 we will publish a Community Events Toolkit, a guide to planning and delivering events in Dumfries and Galloway.  Our Council hopes that this publication will encourage our vibrant voluntary events sector to start planning smaller scale events once more, to assist with community and economic recovery from Covid-19.

One new development for 2021 is the introduction of the Community Events Fund - this Fund will open for applications on 8 March 2021 and close on 23 April 2021.  All of the Fund documents will be online here from 8 March 2021.

Our Council funds the website .  Do please check this website throughout the year for news and information on what is taking place at our Council's galleries and museums and our events calendar that lists all of the main festivals and events taking place in Dumfries and Galloway.

Community Events Toolkit

Dumfries & Galloway Council has updated its Events Toolkit in the light of the Coronavirus Pandemic to provide a practical, easy to use resource for Dumfries and Galloway's festivals and events organisers.  The new Community Events Toolkit includes template risk assessments that can be downloaded and amended for events projects such as Fun Runs and community concerts.  There is guidance on all aspects of events planning, including statutory responsibilities such as applying to the Council for licences when required and road or car park closures, and a host of helpful tips for your festivals and events project.

Dumfries & Galloway Community Events Fund 2021/2022

Dumfries & Galloway Community Events Fund has been introduced in recognition of the important role community festivals and events can play in support of community life and wellbeing across Dumfries & Galloway in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The Fund can assist well-established events to continue in 2021/2022, and provide grant-support to ensure that best practice planning can take place that reassures the public, to enable these events to retain their visitors.  The Fund will also seek to support new and one-off events that provide one means of support for communities to come together to enjoy sport for health and wellbeing, arts and culture or locally important heritage.

The Community Events Fund has a total value of £55,000.  The maximum grant that can be applied for is £3,000 and the minimum grant £500.  Eligible festivals and events projects that are to take place between 1 June 2021 and 31 March 2022 will be considered for funding.

The Community Events Fund is currently closed.
