Scams and illegal trading

Tell us if you've been scammed or know about some type of illegal trading. The information you provide can help us warn and protect others.

Lots of people across Dumfries and Galloway lose money and goods through scams and illegal trading. Dishonest traders often target vulnerable people including the elderly people or people living alone.

We need to know about cons and unlawful business so that we can protect the local community by raising awareness and providing help or advice

The kind of things we want to hear about are:

  • scam letters and calls
  • counterfeit goods
  • doorstep crime (such as bogus workmen or aggressive salespeople)
  • mislabelled goods (such as packages showing incorrect weights)
  • faulty or rigged measuring devices
  • illicit tobacco products
  • puppy trafficking

Report a scam or illegal trading

Submit a scam report online

You'll need to provide:

  • details of the scam or illegal trading
  • a description of what's happened
  • details (or a description) of any people (if known)
  • details (or a description) of any vehicles involved (if known)

You can also email tradingstandards@dumgal.gov.uk or call 030 33 33 3000.

What happens next

Unfortunately we can't respond directly to all of the reports we receive.

We'll use the details you submit to identify local issues that we need to let people know about as well as taking enforcement action in specific cases if we can.

Sometimes we'll have to pass information to another agency so they can investigate.

Further support

You can contact Police Scotland to report fraud , particularly if you've been a victim of complex (linked to serious and organised crime) or high value fraud.

The National Consumer Helpline  can also offer guidance on a range of consumer issues.
