Annandale & Eskdale Schools: badminton comp

The Annandale and Eskdale Primary School Badminton Competition for children aged Primary 5 – 7 was held at Lockerbie Academy on Saturday 17th February.


The competition organised by Active Schools and Community Sport for Dumfries & Galloway Council and sponsored by Magnox Limited attracted over 40 players from local school clubs and badminton clubs. The competition was supported by a number of local coaches, teachers, volunteers and young sports leaders with winners progressing on to a regional final in March with a further opportunity to progress to the national finals in Perth later this year.


After a day of intensive play the results from the six categories were as follows: -

Councillor Jeff Leaver, chair of Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning [CYPLL] committee, said:“It is great to see the sport of badminton flourishing in the area. The number of young people playing and competing is very encouraging and we are very appreciative of the support offered by the many volunteers.”

Councillor Ros Surtees, vice chair, said: "Providing the best start in life for all our children is a Council priority and badminton competition such as this encourage children to be healthy and active."


John Grierson, site closure director at Chapelcross for sponsors Magnox Limited, said: ”The number of sporting opportunities for children in our area is excellent and we are delighted to be associated with such a wide range of events that supports the council priorities and can help raise ambition and attainment in young people."
