Self-Catering Waste
By law, all businesses in Scotland have a responsibility to safely and legally store, transport and dispose of their waste without harming the environment.
Holiday accommodation owners
If you own a guesthouse, B&B, holiday let or self-catering property, you have a duty of care to deal with your waste correctly and in line with legislation.
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 stipulate businesses must take all reasonable steps to separate the following materials for recycling:
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Plastic (bottles, pots, punnets, tubs and trays)
- Metals (cans and tins)
If you are currently using the Council's domestic waste collection and disposal services for your controlled waste (including tipping at our Household Waste Recycling Centres), then you are doing so unlawfully.
What happens next?
The Commercial Waste Team will be writing out to all properties registered as a non-domestic rate payer, and classified as a guesthouse, B&B, holiday let or self- catering property, who do not have a waste agreement set up with Dumfries & Galloway Council.
If you are using Council domestic services, and wish to continue, please contact the Commercial Waste Team to arrange the set-up of a chargeable contract. For these kinds of premises, the services we offer will align with the domestic waste and recycling collection service and further details can be found at Household Waste Service.
If you have an existing contract in place with another commercial waste provider, you will be asked to complete and return a declaration form which will be included in your letter. Arrangements will then be made to remove any Council containers (bins) from the property should you have any.
If we do not hear from you after 21 days of receiving the letter, all Council containers will be removed from your property.
