HWRC FAQ's

Why is a booking system being used?

A booking system will allow the Council to limit the number of people on the site at any one time to allow better management of social distancing. The booking system will ensure that, at what are often peak times, we do not get long queues of traffic forming which can lead to frustration and road safety issues developing.

Booking systems are likely to become more used in the delivery of services such as this to help maintain environments that facilitate social distancing.

How does the booking system work?

The booking system is web-based.  Those wishing to attend one of the twelve sites will be asked to choose a date and time slot (10 minutes long) and enter a few contact details including vehicle registration plate. This will allow site staff to check those arriving at a site have a booking. Providing an email address allows the appointment to be sent as a diary entry which can be loaded into a computer or mobile phone diary app.

What if I'm not travelling by car?

There is an option to advise you are travelling on foot, on a bike or by public transport.

What if I don't have internet access?

If you are unable to access the internet, then a booking can be made by calling 030 33 33 3000

What if I arrive early or late for my booking slot?

We understand that due to distance to your nearest HWRC or traffic conditions at time of travel you may not arrive exactly on time. To allow a reasonable amount of flexibility, the booking system asks you to arrive no earlier than 10 minutes early, to avoid queuing, and that you can arrive up to 10 minutes after your booking time. If you arrive early and the site has capacity, you will likely be permitted to enter. Do not worry if you arrive on time but are delayed in entering the site by vehicles in front, you will still be allowed to dispose of your waste.

What if I arrive without a booking?

Please do not arrive without a booking. It is easy to make a booking by going online or calling the Council on 030 33 33 3000. If you do arrive without a booking you will be turned away due to the capacity of our sites and our need to maintain social distancing.

Will I still have to queue?

At times you may have to wait for a few minutes. But the booking system is designed to minimise this. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Why only 10-minute-long slots?

To provide as many opportunities for the public to recycle the slots have been determined at 10 minutes. This is long enough for most people to recycle a carload of materials. Longer slots would reduce the number available daily and the majority of visits will be within the 10 minutes. To ensure that you are unlikely to exceed 10 minutes we ask you to plan your visit and segregate waste in bags or boxes. Plans of the 12 sites will be available in the near future on each individual HWRC page showing locations of the various skips and containers for recycling.

Are there any restrictions on the reopening?

All recycling services will be offered.

As part of the booking system you will be asked to confirm that you are not bringing trade waste to an HWRC. This includes waste from a household that you have been paid to take to an HWRC. The sites are not licenced to accept trade or commercial waste and this includes anyone receiving payment for undertaking a "dump run".

We hope to reinstate the asbestos disposal service soon and will update the website when we do.

Will staff be able to assist me in unloading my vehicle?

Staff will not be able to assist you in unloading your vehicle. This is to ensure social distancing and also to avoid staff potentially coming into contact with waste items that may be contaminated with COVID-19. It will also reduce the risk of them potentially transferring COVID-19 from one contaminated source to another.

If you are bringing heavy items to the site then you need to bring someone to assist you unload. In general though, please limit the number of people in your vehicle who need to get out at the HWRC to ensure social distancing. Also remember that for safety reasons children must remain in the car at all times, in accordance with normal procedures.

General hygiene and keeping the site clean?

Staff will be wiping down handrails on ramps to skips. But there is clearly a limit as to how often this can be done. Those using the HWRCs are encouraged to follow good hygiene practices and wash hands / use a hand gel after visiting the sites. The use of gloves is recommended.

Hand gel will not be available at the sites for members of the public.

Users will be responsible for maintaining their own social distancing on site in much the same way as you currently do when walking in the street or visiting a supermarket. We appreciate your efforts in this for the safety and wellbeing of all.

Can I book more than one slot at a time?

The system only allows a single booking without filling in the form twice.  There is nothing to stop an individual to make a second booking at another time.

Can I book consecutive slots?

Yes, but only a second one, please.

Can I amend or cancel my booking?

Yes, please click the 'Manage Booking' link in your confirmation email to either amend or cancel your booking with us.
