COVID-19 - schools and childcare
Schools in Dumfries and Galloway have now closed in line with Scottish Government advice. School hubs as well as private providers and childminders are open to provide essential childcare for Critical Key Workers at this time.
Who qualifies as a Critical Key Worker?
Critical key workers are deemed as essential to ensure lifeline health care and community services can be delivered. Emergency childcare will be provided during school and nursery closures for these essential workers who have exhausted all other childcare options.
Various categories of key worker roles have been identified:
Dumfries and Galloway Council facilities
We have fourteen schools open at the moment with five school nurseries also providing childcare for younger children (from birth to 5 years old). Opening hours for these facilities vary:
Register with a council facility
Key workers can register for emergency childcare at one of our schools for a child of any age by contacting the number within the list of facilities:
Please liaise with the staff in your chosen emergency childcare facility to let them know of your childcare needs as far in advance as possible.
Meals, snacks and other supplies
Meals will be provided for all children aged 2 years or older. Children aged up to 2 years old will need to bring meals / snacks / bottles.
Parents / Carers will need to ensure children from 0 to 5 bring a range of provisions to the school nursery:
Private childcare providers and childminders
You can still continue to use any Care Inspectorate registered childminder or childcare provider if you choose.
A number of local childcare providers and childminders are offering childcare with provision for different age groups. You can register with these providers if you meet the key worker criteria and they have a space.
Free School Meals
Providing free school meals and ensuring the welfare and support of our children and young people is a key priority for our council. Due to the ever-changing circumstances of COVID19 we will make sure that a food pack is available to all children and young people who meet the qualifying criteria for free school meals. You must register for this service .
This service will be provided every Tuesday and Friday and you can choose to have it delivered to your door or you can collect it from a central pick up point.
