Gaelic Language Plan 2016-2021

The Gaelic Language Plan sets out how we'll enable the use of Gaelic when communicating with the public, key partners and also how we will promote and develop Gaelic.

The Plan was approved by Dumfries and Galloway Council on 28 June 2016 and was then submitted to Bòrd na Gàidhlig for approval. Our Education and Lifelong Learning Services are responsible for delivery of the Plan.

Development of the Gaelic Language Plan- 2022-2027

The draft new Gaelic Language Plan was approved at the Dumfries & Galloway Council Committee meeting on the 16 December 2021. The accompanying committee report and draft plan can be viewed at agenda item 5 through the following link:

As part of the statutory process, the draft Plan has been submitted to Bòrd na Gàidhlig for final consideration. The final version of the Plan will be available to view here in early 2022.

Vision and objections

We'll work toward putting in place the necessary structures and initiatives to ensure that Gaelic has a sustainable future in Scotland.

Key actions

The Council recognise the importance of:

  • extending the visibility of Gaelic and increasing its status.
  • creating opportunities for the practical use of Gaelic in a wide range of everyday situations and is committed to increasing its level of provision in this area.
  • increasing the use of Gaelic in areas where the subject matter is of most interest to the general public or relates specifically to Gaelic issues.
  • seeing Gaelic as an important job skill and of identifying situations in which its use is essential or desirable.
  • enabling staff to develop their Gaelic skills if they wish to do so.
