The planning authority is required to monitor the impact of the policies and proposals of the existing plans and changes in the principal physical, economic, social and environmental characteristics of the area.

The outcome of this is contained in the monitoring statement and is one way of identifying the issues to discuss in the Main Issues Report and whether there is a requirement for new policies. The statement is also one part of the evidence base for preparing the Local Development Plan.
