The Ecodeco waste treatment plant near Dumfries treats the majority of wheeled bin and refuse sack waste from households and commercial premises which use Dumfries and Galloway Council's waste collection service. It's the first facility of its kind in Scotland and can process up to 65,000 tonnes of waste a year.
The Ecodeco technology achieves diversion of waste from landfill, recovery of certain resources and metal recycling. This has helped Dumfries and Galloway Council achieve the European Union targets for landfill diversion through reducing the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill.
At Ecodeco the waste is shredded, dried and aerobically composted for 14-16 days which reduces the weight of the waste by around a third. The dried waste is then sorted into the following resources:
- Solid recovered fuel
Containing plastics, textiles, paper and cardboard which can be thermally treated to produce energy or used as a replacement to fossil fuel. This material is currently sent to cement kilns or landfilled
- 8-20mm Fraction*
Material in the range 8-20mm including glass and stone. This is currently landfilled.
Mainly consist of steel cans, cutlery, screws, nails and others pieces of ferrous and non ferrous metals which are sent for recycling
- Compost like material*
A dust like material in the range of 0-8mm. The intention is to use this material in the future as part of landfill restoration projects, , subject to Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) approval
*We are currently investigating refinement of this resource.
Householders can help to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by reducing and reusing waste where possible. There are also Household Waste Recycling Centres and Recycling Points across Dumfries and Galloway which can be used by householders to sort large and small items into recycling banks so that these resources can be recycled.
