On occasions Community Councils need to work together for their area. This is called the Community Council Association/Federation.

There are four local Community Council Associations/Federations representing separate parts of Dumfries and Galloway. Each has a slightly different programme and emphasis. Some only represent a proportion of Community Councils in their area. All provide a channel for Community Councils to act together. All provide the local authority with a vehicle of communication and a means of rapid consultation with the Community Councils in the area.

The aims of these Associations/Federations are: 

• to promote the role, effectiveness and status of Community Councils;
• to facilitate the flow of information between Community Councils;
• to provide a forum for discussion of matters of common interest to Community Councils; and
• to work with Dumfries and Galloway Council to achieve our aims.

The four Associations/Federations are:

• Annandale and Eskdale Federation of Community Councils
• Dumfries and Lower Nithsdale Federation of Community Councils
• Mid and Upper Nithsdale Association of Community Councils
• Convention of Stewartry Community Councils

The Association of Scottish Community Councils (ASCC)

The ASCC has much in common with aims of the local Associations but is national. Membership of the ASCC is open to all Community Councils. The ASCC publishes regular newsletters which will be of interest and relevance to all Community Councils. The ASCC Executive is comprised of representatives from all areas of Scotland. Both the east and west areas of Dumfries and Galloway are presently unrepresented.
