  • KnowUK - Over 100 reference publications provide a comprehensive resource for everybody in the UK.  Most are unique to KnowUK and are not available elsewhere online.  Available in every library and from home to library members.
  • Wikipedia - Encyclopedia containing information which cannot be found elsewhere.

  • Dumfries and Galloway Historical Indexes - Dumfries and Galloway Historical Indexes enable you to search their database on the 1851 census as well as other indexed local resources.
  • ScotlandsPeople - Scotland's People is the official government source of genealogical data for Scotland offering searchable databases on the Scottish General Registrars site for birth, death and marriage certificates.  It also has information on the Old Parish Register Indexes of Baptisms and Marriages as well as Census Returns from 1851 to 1901.  Also provides details on Scottish Wills.
  • Find my past - Formerly 1837 online.com.  Use this site to search the England and Wales General Registration. This is a chargeable site where you buy credits to search each quarterly index - an index which you can get for free at Carlisle Library or is free at the England and Wales General Registration Index - Free Site details of which are also listed on this page.  This site however also gives access to the 1861 and 1891 Census for England and Wales.
  • FreeBMD - Use this free site to search the England and Wales General Registration Index.  Although not complete, this free site has more entries added weekly, and has quite good coverage for the period around 1880 - 1903.
  • Family Search - Family Search enables searches on the Mormon Website for IGI (International Genealogical Index) as well as the English 1881 Census records.
  • 1901 Census Online - Search the 1901 Census for England and Wales.  This is a chargeable site, £5 being the minimum charge for access.
  • GENUKI - Search GENUKI for information on UK and Ireland genealogy.  It offers information on all British Parishes.
  • Commonwealth War Graves Commission - The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website lists British Commonwealth Forces who died in World War I or World War II as well as 60,000 civilian World War II casualties who are also included in this searchable database.
  • Irish Genealogy - Search the Irish Genealogy databases for information on ancestors in Ireland.  This site is particularly good for searches relating to Southern Ireland.
  • Irish Origins - Irish Origins provides a wealth of information on Irish genealogy.
  • Public Record Office of Northern Ireland - Search the records of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
