This rural school in the Machars area of Wigtownshire looks out over the beautiful Rig Bay with a beach on its doorstep. Only 14 miles from Newton Stewart, and the main A75 Carlisle to Stranraer trunk road, the school has a central location in Galloway. Set in a thriving village community the school enjoys strong support from local residents and families alike.
The village has a rich history which includes the secret design and testing of the Mulberry Harbours which were instrumental in the successful conclusion of WWII.
Agriculture and fishing are the main industries in the area with a functional harbour also supporting tourism and a prestigious caravan park. There are various community events throughout the year including Garlieston Gala spanning a week of activities in the summer bringing the local wider community together. The village boasts a well supported youth club, Sunday school, mother & toddler group and bowling club. Garlieston Community Council meets on a regular basis.
Both schools enjoy a weekly cluster day which is based on collaborative activities and many vital gains are achieved both on an educational and social perspective.
The Parent Council has an excellent working relationship with staff and supports the everyday life and work of both schools. There are two composite classes, P1-4 and P5-7.
There is an active gardening club at the school, run by parents and the benefits can be seen all around the school grounds. Already awarded its first Green Flag the school's Eco Committee is currently working towards its second.
Children take part in many activities both on a regional and national basis. The school has clear vision of providing the very best learning and teaching experiences to prepare children for life in the 21st Century. Garlieston Primary embraces all principles and values that Curriculum for Excellence brings and is proud of its level of attainment, achievement and active participation of all its young people.
