Councillors talk with Stena Line

Thursday, 08 October 2009 03:53 PM
Two Councillors from Dumfries and Galloway Council and the director of economic regeneration have met with a director of Stena Line at the company's headquarters.

The meeting was held while the Council delegation was attending the Annual General Assembly of the European political network of Peripheral Maritime Regions, which was held this year in in Göteborg, Sweden.

The delegation met with Robert Akerlund, Stena Line's director of technical and human resources, who is overseeing the project to relocate Stena Line from its current base in Stranraer to Old House Point in north east Loch Ryan.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Robert Higgins, chairman of the North Channel Partnership, said, “Our visit to Göteborg provided an excellent opportunity to meet with Stena senior management.

"The Old House point project is at a critical stage with final preparations being made to present the details to the Stenaline board later this year. We were very much encouraged by the progress update we received in Göteborg and, of course, were keen to assure the company that the local authority would do all in its power to help facilitate this major inward investment opportunity for Stranraer and the region.”

Stena Line is now beginning the technical and financial evaluation of the complex tenders received to take the project to fruition. Once completed, this will pave the way for the development of the overall waterfront regeneration programme.

After the meeting, Councillor Roger Grant, chairman of the Council’s Planning, Housing and Environment Services Committee, said, “In our discussions with Robert Akerlund, he was keen to commend the joint working between the Council and the company, particularly our recent success in having the Loch Ryan ports included in Scotland’s new national planning framework.

"The related transport infrastructure is a vital part of our ambition to put Dumfries and Galloway on the map and this project will help consolidate the international gateway status of Loch Ryan and its ferry operators.”

Stena Line anticipates being able to make final announcements on the project early in the New Year.
