Roads

Roads in the local area are continually monitored for safety and reliability. As a result improvement schemes are often put in place. Engineering Design have carried out work on the design, contract preparation and site supervision of numerous schemes.

A7 Trunk Road Auchenrivock Improvement

  • The 3.25km A7 Auchenrivock Improvement scheme has enhanced the safety, comfort and reliability of the Trunk road network and provides 1.650km of overtaking opportunities in both directions.
  • After reviewing and appraising a number of possible alignments, a preferred route to the west of the existing A7 road was selected. To maximise overtaking opportunities, extensive earthworks in difficult terrain were required, with the excavation of some 750,000 tonnes of material. The construction of a concrete portal frame underpass for the U251 road and provision of 690m of farm track removed the need for direct field access points or cross over movements on the new section of road. The local community is served with two ghost island road junctions located at either end of the overtaking opportunity section. An adjacent cycle by-pass facility has also been provided utilising the old trunk road.
  • During the design process, early consideration was given to environmental issues with an environmental scoping report and stage 2 and 3 Environmental Assessments. This determined the need for a formal Environmental Impact Assessment, which was published as an Environmental Statement in 2006. Identified mitigation measures were incorporated in the final design. This included the provision of mammal underpasses and badger/otter fencing, a sustainable drainage system, sympathetic landscaping to mitigate the road impact and provide new habitats and the construction of noise/visual bunds. The installation of the three large multi-plate corrugated culverts up to 4.28 m diameter included fish passes and mammal ledges where appropriate. The construction of 20m high reinforced earth embankments of slope 1:1 shortened the length of culverts to facilitate the movement of fish and mammals through the culverts. To minimise disturbance to the local community and the environment, the cut and fill of bulk earthworks was balanced to reduce the movement of construction traffic on local roads.

A75 Trunk Road Cairntop to Barlae

Client :  The Scottish Executive

Project Value: £4.5 million

A75 Trunk Road Cairntop to Barlae Displays a larger version of this image in a new browser window

This scheme was a result of the A75 Route Action Plan that considered the route between Gretna and Stranraer and identified improvement needs.

Design Services are sub-consultants to Mouchel Parkman, and were responsible for the design and contract preparation of the 2.5km scheme.

The brief was for a widened carriageway providing alternating dedicated overtaking opportunities (WS2+1). The extent of peat discovered during ground investigation works raised maintenance concerns and the scheme was redesigned as dual carriageway where the west bound carriageway uses the existing road and the east bound carriageway uses the adjacent abandoned railway.

Early in 1997, Dumfries and Galloway Council was successful in obtaining Challenge Funding for contribution to on-site works for the Cargenbridge Plastics Technology Park and off-site road improvements on the A711.

Phase I of the project included the A711/Garroch Loaning junction improvement including a mini-roundabout.

Phase II consisted of road improvements adjacent to the Du Pont works including the provision of a 5-way roundabout and new 3.2m wide cycleway.

Phase III consisted of a masonry arch bridge widening and road improvements including new road lighting traffic calming measures and cycleway provision.

A76 Trunk Road Glenairlie Improvement

Client :  The Scottish Executive

Project Value : £3.5M

A76 Trunk Road Glenairlie Improvement

One of the objectives of the A76 Route Action Plan (RAP) study was to examine the potential for improvement of the road by a programme of local improvement schemes to provide overtaking opportunities and reduce platoons, driver frustration, and accidents. Glenairlie was identified as one such improvement scheme.

Mouchel in association with Dumfries and Galloway Council were commissioned by the Scottish Executive under the Multiple Framework Agreement to carry out assessment, design, contract preparation, and supervision of the scheme.

This design process was undertaken by DGDesign. The scheme consists of a combination of widening to the existing road and new "green field" alignment providing a three lane single carriageway incorporating a dedicated lane for overtaking. The improvement is likely to be in excess of 2km long.

The scheme was a result of the A76 Route Action Plan objectives which considered the condition of the route between Dumfries and Kilmarnock and identified traffic loadings and improvement needs.

Dumfries and Galloway Council were responsible for the design, contract preparation and site supervision of the scheme.

The works consist of the widening and improvement to visibility of the existing road which entailed full re-construction, overlays, new drainage systems and public utility diversion in order to achieve an overtaking section to full trunk road standards. The total scheme length is 1.6km
