At Enterkinfoot continual ground movement and erosion of the existing rock slopes threatened the alignment of the existing A76 trunk road.

Remedial works were undertaken to stabilise the ground beneath the existing carriageway. At the same time the works aim to improve both road width and alignment.

The works involved construction of a reinforced concrete retaining wall tied back to the existing rock slope using permanent ground anchors.

River protection works were carried out at Hoghill to make good existing land slips and prevent future undermining of the adjacent Edinburgh to Carlisle Trunk Road A7.

The work involved the provision of rock armour and the reprofiling of the existing slipped slope on the east side of the River Esk.

At the same time the alignment of the river was moved to the west and a new raised flood bank constructed to protect an adjacent fish farm.

During the construction phase the river was temporarily re-aligned to minimise pollution.
