The Academy has a rich and distinguished history tracing its roots back to 1330 when John of Greyfriars set up a school in the town. Today it provides an excellent education for young people from Dumfries Burgh and the surrounding area.

Dumfries Academy has a long history of serving the people of Dumfries and Galloway. Former pupils include J M Barrie, playwright, John Hanson, opera singer, Rev Dr Henry Duncan, founder of the first savings bank, Alexander S Graham, cartoonist famous for the Fred Bassett series, John Laurie, actor, Jane Haining, teacher recognised as Righteous Among the Nations by the people of Israel, Sir James Anderson, engineer responsible for transatlantic telegraphy links and Jock Wishart, a modern day adventurer. These and many other former pupils have distinguished themselves in every field of public life.
