The school is a six year comprehensive school situated in the small market town of Newton Stewart, a very attractive area of South West Scotland. The school catchment area includes all the Machars peninsula and extends north beyond Barrhill.

Douglas Ewart High School was opened in 1922. It was the amalgamation of the Douglas Free School opened in 1834 and the High School of the Ewart Institute opened in 1864. 

We have a long and rich history. Former pupils have excelled in arts, sport, business and public life.  These include the founder of modern veterinary research John McFadzean, film director and writer Adrian McDowall, member of the Australian Parliament John Dedman and Nobel Prize Winner James A Mirrlees.
