The original Annan Academy was founded in 1802 and the history of the public school can be traced back to the 17th Century. Former pupils include Thomas Carlyle and current Depute First Minister, Jim Wallace.

The school's associated primaries are Hecklegirth, Gretna, Brydekirk, Newington, Eastriggs, Carrutherstown, Springfield, Kirkpatrick FlemingCummertrees and St Columba's.
