Dumfries and Galloway Council, through the Development Plan process, identified a large area of land for development at Marchfield. The site extends from the Lockerbie Road to the rear of the existing housing development at the Edinburgh Road and onto the bypass.

Due to the size of the site it will take a number of years to develop and as a result a Masterplan has been produced. A design brief was issued in January 2002, a development consortium representing the landowning interests and potential developers of this area has worked with the Council to create this Masterplan, which is also known as an Area Development Framework.

The framework has been prepared by and sets out the vision for the future development of this area. The Planning & Environment Services Committee agreed the Area Development Framework on 13 September 2005.
