The Film Theatre is run by Dumfries and Galloway Council to provide an alternative film-going experience to people in the region. It plays a major role in the cultural life of the town, and beyond, by providing a rich and diverse programme that aims to stimulate, entertain and inform, and screens world cinema, foreign language films, low-budget independent films, documentaries, short films, archive and animation films as well as mainstream blockbuster films. The cinema often arranges for speakers to introduce films, and it offers a range of film-related workshops and courses.
On average 130 titles are shown in the single screen, part-time 69-seater cinema each year. The cinema is open in the evenings, Tuesday to Saturday and there are occasional daytime screenings, such as the special screenings for parents and babies, and the popular coffee club on Thursday mornings where, for a modest £6.30 (or £4.80 concession) you can enjoy a cup of good coffee, a cake and watch a great film.
The cinema received a full technical up-grade in April 2000, and has professional 35 mm, 16 mm and digital projection facilities, Dolby Surround sound, comfortable seats with plenty of legroom, organic ice-cream and hand-made chocolates for sale in the foyer, and friendly and helpful staff.
The cinema is available for group hire, school and community group screenings: please e-mail Alice Stilgoe Film Officer phone 01387 263094.
