The hall was built via community effort and fundraising. This resulted in a company being established to build and run the hall in 1882. The building survived a major fire at the turn of the century and has continued to have a key role in the social and public life of Sanquhar. The building is used for both informal and formal events in the town and is the focal point for local community activities.
