Harbour Waste Reception and Disposal

Our region's harbours are provided with efficient, effective and sustainable waste management facilities. Dumfries and Galloway Council has a statutory responsibility to comply with the Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulations 2003.

The pdf icon Port Waste Management Plan [1Mb] fulfils the requirements of the Regulations and covers all 5 harbours.

The objectives of the Plan are:

  • To comply with all legislation relating to the disposal of waste.
  • To provide a framework for the co-ordinated management of harbour waste.
  • To minimise production of waste and to reuse or recycle waste wherever possible.
  • To dispose of waste wisely in order to minimise negative environmental effects.
  • To promote education and awareness of wise waste management.
  • To ensure that all users are aware of the provisions within the harbour for the reception and disposal of waste from ships, other seagoing vessels and offshore installations.
  • To promote education and awareness of wise waste management.
