Older People - Activities

The council provides leisure activities for older people in the community. This may include Day Centres or cultural, sporting and other organised social activities.

Day centres around the region give support to older people living in the community. They offer companionship, friendship and assistance, and some centres cater for people from the age of 55. Day care is sometimes available within care homes too. The following Day Centres in Dumfries and Galloway offer a happy, social environment:

In addition to these day centres, Dumfries and Galloway Council operate numerous Leisure Facilities across the region, offering a wide range of physical activities which would be suitable for older people.

Older people have more to gain than younger people by becoming active. Exercise helps manage diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol - all common in older people.

Exercise can even improve mental function. It doesn't take long - thirty minutes walking on most days of the week has remarkable health benefits for older people. So don't delay, start exercising today.
