Historical searches of births, deaths and marriage

Assisted searches of the statutory records of Births, Deaths and Marriage from 1855 onwards and more recently Civil Partnerships are available from the Genealogy Research Service by appointment only. Access to the National Index for Scotland is also available. There is a fee for this service.

There are 2 centres within Dumfries and Galloway offering genealogy research facilities.  The Registrar will provide an assisted search and applicants can view the records and take pencil notes or purchase an extract of the entry.

Area Repository held in Dumfries
Housing records from parishes going as far north as Wanlockhead, over to Bargrennan in Wigtownshire, Borgue in Kirkcudbrightshire and to the border at Canonbie also including the Dumfries parishes.  The International Genealogical Index for Scotland by counties of the Old Parochial Records are also available.

Area Repository held in Stranraer
Housing records from the former County of Wigtown which comprises the parishes of Glasserton, Inch, Kirkcolm, Kirkcowan, Kirkinner, Luce, Penninghame, Portpatrick, Sorbie, Stoneykirk, Stranraer, Whithorn and Wigtown.  The International Genealogical Index for Scotland is also available.

Both facilities also have access to records for the whole of Scotland and further information can be obtained from the Registration offices.
