Homelessness is something that can happen to anyone, from all walks of life. The Homeless Service provides information and advice about housing to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

If you are homeless, threatened with homelessness and require advice or assistance, please contact one of the Homeless Offices detailed below.

Local authorities have a legal duty to help homeless people:

• Firstly, by interviewing you and assessing your housing situation.
• Secondly, by offering you temporary or permanent accommodation - provided your circumstances meet the criteria set out in Part II of the Housing Scotland Act 1987 as amended by the Housing (Scotland) Act 2001.

To be accepted as a homeless person for permanent re-housing in Dumfries and Galloway under the 1987 Act you must:

• Be homeless or threatened with homeless within 2 months
• Have a priority need
• Not have made yourself intentionally homeless
• Have a local connection with Dumfries and Galloway.

Appointments can be arranged in any of our offices or Customer Service Centres and in extreme circumstances we can arrange to see you in your own home.

Anyone who is homeless and finds themselves with nowhere to stay when the area offices are closed should contact the Out of Hours Emergency Service on 0800 811 505 and they will be able to help.
