Schools - English as an Additional Language

Support for children for whom English is an additional language. This may be provided by specialist teaching staff through assessment, advice, consultation, training of other staff, assistance with appropriate strategies and / or the provision of resources.

This depends on the child's familiarity with English which is assessed as ranging from new to English (1) through to a fluent user of English (5). Teaching staff from the service endeavour to give the equivalent of two periods support per week at Level 1 and 2, either to groups or individuals.

Language plans are prepared and shared with class teachers.  Also, through consultation, advice is offered on strategies and resources.

The translation service Language Line is available to all schools to help with enrolment, parents evenings, etc.
