Many of the facilities offered are available to all the residents of and visitors to Dumfries and Galloway. There is no necessity to be a library member to visit one of our twenty five service points throughout the area. However to gain the greatest benefit membership is highly recommended.
Remember Library Membership is free!
What are the benefits?
Library members can:
How do I join?
Joining is easy. Ask at any library for a membership form, details of all libraries and their opening times are given on this site. If you take some proof of identification then you can join immediately. What we need to have is your name, address and signature. This does not have to be on the same document, a combination is acceptable as long as they are consistent. A driving licence is ideal because it contains all three elements. On completion of the form and acceptance of ID then a card will be issued which grants you membership of all Libraries in Dumfries and Galloway.
With Instant Membership you can join the library without having to show any proof of identification. Once you have filled in a membership form and received your card you can borrow two books straight away. There is no time limit for being an Instant Member and the membership can be upgraded at any time by calling in to your nearest library and showing proof of identification (name, address and signature).
Instant Membership only allows you to borrow two books but upgrading to Full Membership allows you to borrow more items, including DVDs. You can also use the internet and access eBooks, eMagazines and online resources.
Are you under sixteen?
There is one further stage if you are under sixteen. A guarantor needs to be provided to ensure the safe return of any materials borrowed. This may mean a return home to get a parent to sign or you could bring someone with you. If you would like to use the internet without a parent or guardian then you will need to get the permission slip signed too.
How much does it cost?
Membership is free. Many of the services are also free such as book lending or internet access. There are charges made for some of our services and these are laid out in the Leaflet - Library Fees and Charges [104kb] on this site or from any library.
