Welfare reform

The UK Government is changing the welfare benefit system to try to make it simpler, reduce dependency on benefits and encourage people into work. These changes will have an impact on the way you claim benefits, what they are called and what you are now eligible for.

Waiting days increasing for JSA and ESA

The number of waiting days for Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) will increase from three to seven days from 27 October 2014.  

Changes announced in the March budget

Public access to PCs in Dumfries and Galloway
It is vital that people have access to computers as well as the skills and knowledge to use them so that they can access the best advice, affordable services and up to date information as changes to the benefit system are implemented. Our Council have started identifying where the public can use computers across the region which includes free access at all of our Council's libraries for library members: 

Some of the changes may mean that you could have to manage a smaller budget on a monthly basis, make claims online, find additional childcare, move to a smaller rental property or develop your skills to help you find a job.

The Welfare Reform changes particularly affect people of working age. This normally means someone up to state pension age. State pension ages are changing. If you were 61 before 6 October 2012 your benefits may not be affected, but where you have a younger partner there may be a change from October 2013.
