Common signs of domestic abuse

Domestic abuse can take many different forms. It isn't always easy to spot abuse or victims of abuse but there are some common signs of abuse.

  • hitting / punching / slapping
  • pushing / shoving
  • kicking
  • burning
  • hair pulling
  • cutting

Sexual abuse

  • demanding / expecting sex
  • putting pressure on someone to have sex
  • suggesting they 'will get it somewhere else'
  • dictating how someone should make love
  • unwanted sex / sex against someone's will (rape)
  • making someone have sex with other people
  • making someone engage in types of sex they aren't comfortable
  • making someone watch or re-enact pornography
  • threatening to end a relationship if there is no sex
  • refusing to or not allowing someone to use contraception / protection
  • sabotaging contraception (such as breaking a condom)
  • making someone have an abortion or not allowing them to have one
  • making someone sign a 'sexual contract'
  • inspecting someone's underwear after they've been on a night out
  • using 'revenge porn' against someone

Financial / economic abuse

  • taking control of finances
  • excluding someone from important financial decisions
  • stopping someone from getting or keeping a job
  • taking money from someone
  • not giving someone money or giving them an allowance
  • making it difficult  / not allowing someone to have a bank account
  • making someone pay their bills or cancel their debts
  • taking loans in someone's name
  • blaming someone if there's not enough money
  • selling someone's possessions when they don't want to

Emotional / psychological abuse

  • dominating someone
  • discrediting someone
  • isolating someone
  • showing indifference to someone
  • persuading someone to do something they don't want to do
